Error: 'Daemon is Not Running'

What Is a Daemon and How Do I Fix This?

All Intego software shares the same 'daemon' - which is an invisible application that handles filtering, virus scanning, etc., in the background.  Generally the 'daemon' crash is caused by:

  • Running an incompatible version of Intego software with the version of Mac OS X you are using
  • Adding Intego software to your Startup/Login Items

The daemon error may be caused by using an incompatible version of Intego software with the version of Mac OS X you are using.  All Intego products use the same daemon (a background process) and they ALL need to updated in order to work properly.

You can download updated installers from the following link:

IMPORTANT:  Please make sure that you have not added NetUpdate, NetBarrier, VirusBarrier, ContentBarrier or Personal Backup to your StartUp/Login items!

NetUpdate, VirusBarrier, NetBarrier, ContentBarrier and Personal Backup automatically launch and run in the background once they are installed. There is no need for them to be in the Startup items with OS X. The only reason you would need to manually launch them is to run a manual scan, or change settings. They are constantly running in the background and will alert you if a virus is detected, or a problem is found.

Once installed and configured, you do not need to launch the application again to benefit from the software's features. All Intego software products are handled by a background, faceless application (commonly referred to as a "daemon").

To make sure the Intego daemon is running, you can use Activity Monitor which is in the Applications > Utilities folder. Launch Process Viewer, display all the running operations and check for "integod" which is the name of the daemon.

You should NOT add any Intego products to your Startup Items/Login Items in System Preferences.  Please remove any Intego software from your Startup/Login Items and restart your computer.
